The "Ärztebriefe" in the Neefe-Lade of the Chemnitz City Archive and their cataloguing

Next Wednesday, 9 November, from 6 pm, Dr Tilmann Walter from the Institute for the History of Medicine at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities will speak on the topic: The "Ärztebriefe" in the Neefe-Lade of the Chemnitz City Archive and their indexing. The lecture will take place in the Chemnitz City Archive, Aue 16. Admission is free. There will also be a small exhibition of the Neefe-Lade, letters and documents.
The names of Johann Neefe (1499-1574) and Caspar Neefe (1514-1579) are hardly known today - although the two brothers were undoubtedly among the most prominent physicians of their time. The Neefe family was even ennobled in 1559 for their services as personal physicians to the Saxon electors. The Chemnitz City Archive preserves the "Neefe-Lade", which contains around 100 documents and is something like the material "family memory" of the Neefes. In addition to documents from their studies and, of course, Emperor Ferdinand's letter of nobility, there are many documents relating to the Neefe Foundation, which the childless Johann Neefe used to support needy students in Leipzig and Wittenberg. In addition, letters from numerous aristocratic patients provide a sometimes fascinating insight into the work and life of two princely personal physicians. The speaker, Dr Tilmann Walter, studied German and history in Heidelberg and has been a research assistant at the Würzburg database "Early Modern Medical Letters of the German-speaking World (1500-1700)" since 2009.
