"Terra Nova Campus": school for the physically disabled gets a new name
Next year, the pupils of the Chemnitz Special Education Centre for the Physically Disabled will move to their new school complex on Heinrich-Schütz-Straße. The move in summer 2015 to the school campus currently under construction will also be accompanied by a change of name for the school. The educational institution for pupils with disabilities will be called "Terra Nova Campus - Die Entdeckerschule Förderzentrum für Körperbehinderte" in future. This was decided by the city council on Wednesday.
Pupils, parents and teachers at the educational institution had previously discussed the school's self-image and formulated goals and perspectives, with the result that in January of this year, the school conference decided on the name that has now been confirmed by the city council.
The name "Terra Nova Campus" stands for the entire site of the school complex. The name, derived from Latin, was chosen because the site is a new location for the development centre, but also because the site is now being given a new purpose after years of military use.
"The Discovery School" refers to the school area. The focus is on taking into account the special life situations of the children and young people and promoting their strengths.
"Die Entdeckerschule" consists of a primary and secondary school in which both physically and mentally disabled pupils learn. The school also includes a counselling centre, all-day care and a home for children and young people with physical and multiple disabilities as well as a medical therapy area.
The city began building the new school complex in August 2012 and the construction work on the Heinrich-Schütz-Straße site is due to be completed in summer 2015. At the start of the 2015/2016 school year, the Chemnitz special education centre for children with physical disabilities, the home and all-day care will be relocated from Wittgensdorfer Straße 121 a to Heinrich-Schütz-Straße.
