Take heat hazards seriously - implement heat protection consistently
Nationwide Heat Action Day on 5 June - Heat section of the Heat Action Plan is published
On the occasion of the nationwide Heat Action Day on 5 June, the City of Chemnitz's environmental department is providing information on the status of the Heat Action Plan. This plan is being drawn up to protect particularly vulnerable groups of the city's population. The heat action plan consists of a heat section and a measures section. The heat section is the prerequisite for starting the second work package with targeted measures.
Increasing heat stress is one of the key challenges facing the city of Chemnitz. In order to develop targeted heat protection measures and correctly prioritise their implementation in the city area, the Environmental Agency, in cooperation with the Office for Prevention and Health, is now publishing the heat section. The specialist section provides background information on the impact of heat on human health, analyses current climatic developments for Chemnitz and shows which parts of the city are particularly affected by heat.
In addition to this specialised section, public awareness of the issue of heat is being increased. At www.chemnitz.de/hitze you will find the most important tips on how to behave in hot weather, heat warnings from the German Weather Service, information for particularly heat-prone population groups and information on refill stations and drinking fountains.
In addition, an interactive "City map for hot days" shows, among other things, places to cool off.

Urban development measures include new drinking fountains in Konkordiapark, Küchwald and Brühl. The Morgenleite park is being redesigned with an integrated water playground. Turf tracks will be used in the expansion of the Chemnitz model and schools will be retrofitted with external shading.
In the planned measures section of the heat action plan, the measures are then prioritised and given a time horizon. Relevant measures will be jointly identified in discussions with particularly affected stakeholder groups, e.g. care facilities, schools and daycare centres.
However, measures for a heat-resilient city go beyond communication measures in acute cases or long-term urban development measures: they also include training for staff at social institutions and environmental education programmes for children and young people specifically on the topic of climate-adapted urban development. With the Minecraft and Climate Rallye projects, the city of Chemnitz has developed target group-orientated projects as part of the INTERLACE project.
Nationwide heat action day
The nationwide Heat Action Day appeals to the expertise of various stakeholders, as heat protection is a joint task. The federal government, federal states and local authorities have a responsibility here, as do people who work with groups that are particularly vulnerable to heat.
Ultimately, everyone can take effective precautionary measures to protect themselves and their loved ones in the event of heat.
