Taboo subject: violence in couple relationships

Lecture at the adult education centre on 23 January, 7 pm

The sociologist and social scientist Prof. Dr Barbara Kavemann will be giving a lecture on Thursday, 23 January at 7 p.m. in the TIETZ event hall in which she will take a scientific look at the little-discussed issue of violence in couple relationships. The lecture is intended to promote good practice to curb violence and encourage civil courage in the neighbourhood. Admission is free.

Violence in couple relationships is now seen as a serious threat. It is a form of violence that is usually labelled in general terms as an "abusive relationship" and reduced to physical violence. Extended legal reforms and improved intervention and counselling options are increasingly helping to protect those affected. New research provides information on the extent to which people are affected and the health and social risks associated with violence in couple relationships and gives a differentiated picture of the topic.

Children in families in which the mother is abused by the father or violence occurs between the parents are also affected by this violence in many ways. They witness the abuse, which should also be seen as a form of violence. Children go on the run, are present during police operations and bear all the consequences that violence entails. Their healthy development can be impaired by witnessing violence. They need appropriate support and guidance.

This event is a co-operation between the Agricolaforum, the Chair of Intercultural Communication at Chemnitz University of Technology and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
