Syria, Libya and beyond - Military interventions and international law

An online lecture on Thursday, 11 February, from 7.30 to 9 pm, will focus on military interventions and international law. Participation is free of charge. Anyone interested can register at www.vhs-chemnitz.de by midnight on Wednesday, 10 February and will receive an access link by email.
International law prohibits states from using force in their relations - but not without exception: states may defend themselves against armed attacks, they may consent to military interventions by external actors and the UN Security Council has the authority to authorise military intervention. Against the background of these rules of peacekeeping law and the interventions in Libya and Syria, the online lecture will address the following questions: What circumstances authorise military interventions by external actors? Which should they be and when are interventions an imperative, when a danger?
The speaker PD Dr iur. Paulina Starski works at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law. She has held professorships at the Universities of Cologne and Berlin and currently at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg.
The event is part of the series "vhs.wissen live - the digital science programme" as a cooperation between the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and the Erding and SüdOst Adult Education Centres in the district of Munich as well as the Max Planck Society.
