Sustainability theme week begins on 18 September

From Monday to Saturday, 18 to 23 September, Chemnitz City Library is organising the Sustainability Week. To mark European Mobility Week (16 to 22 September) and European Sustainability Week (20 to 26 September), the city library is planning events and media tips from its collection on the topics of mobility and sustainability.

Public libraries are inherently sustainable in the way they function. Borrowing books and other media is based on the sustainable strategy of sharing instead of buying or owning. If you share or lend items, you use them more often and therefore more efficiently. This is socially responsible and conserves resources.

The following events are on the programme for the Sustainability Week:

Monday, 18 September, 7 pm

Verena Keßler reads from her novel "Eva"

What are the arguments for and against having children today? To what extent would the world be a better place as a result? Can only stopping births really save the planet? Verena Keßler tells the story of women who find their own answers to these questions.

Verena Keßler, born in Hamburg in 1988, lives in Leipzig, where she studied at the German Literature Institute. Her debut novel "Die Gespenster von Demmin" (2020) was nominated for and honoured with numerous awards.

Ernst Paul Dörfler "To the country"

In his new book "Aufs Land. Ways out of the climate crisis, monoculture and consumer compulsion", environmentalist Ernst Paul Dörfler explains what a free and self-determined life means and how it can work. Whether you live in the city or in the country, this book is a wake-up call and shows perspectives for a free, environmentally and climate-friendly life.

Ernst Paul Dörfler, born in 1950 in Kemberg near Lutherstadt Wittenberg, holds a doctorate in ecochemistry. His book "Zurück zur Natur?" (1986) became a cult book of the East German environmental movement. He has been honoured with numerous awards, including the EURONATUR Prize from the European Natural Heritage Foundation. In 2019, his book "Nest Warmth. What we can learn from birds".

An event organised by the BUND Chemnitz regional group in cooperation with the city library.

"Test your ecological footprint" trail

The ecological footprint is an important sustainability indicator. It creates a personal approach to the topic of sustainability and provides an introduction to a more in-depth examination of issues relating to sustainable development for society as a whole. This course makes finding out your own footprint a playful experience.

Exhibition on the Chemnitz Environmental Award for Children and Young People 2023

The Chemnitz Environmental Prize for Children and Young People has been awarded annually since 1991. It serves to sensitise young people to the need to treat the environment with care as the basis of human life. This year, 26 projects were submitted by 668 children and young people. The exhibition presents the results of the winners.
