Sustainability conference in Chemnitz for the second time
Tomorrow, the Hans-Carl-von-Carlowitz-Gesellschaft is organising a sustainability conference for the second time. Mayor Barbara Ludwig will welcome the guests from 9.30 a.m. in the Chemnitz Opera House. Prominent visitors are expected, including Kurt Biedenkopf, former Minister President of Saxony. He will give a laudatory speech for the author Ulrich Grober.
Sustainability Award 2014
Grober is one of the two winners of the 2014 Sustainability Award. The author deals with the topics of cultural history and visions of the future. With his book "Die Entdeckung der Nachhaltigkeit. Cultural History of a Concept", he shows that sustainability is not a buzzword, but has cultural-historical roots. At the conference, he will give a lecture entitled "Thinking into the future with Carlowitz".
The second prize winner is the scientist Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker. He specialises in climate change, the environment and nature conservation. The nephew of former German President Richard von Weizsäcker will give a lecture entitled "Sustainability with Factor Five". Among other things, von Weizsäcker was head of the UN Centre for Science and Technology in New York and director of the Institute for European Environmental Policy in Bonn, Paris and London. The laudatory speech for von Weizsäcker will be held by Volker Angres, head of the environmental editorial department at ZDF.
Cooperation agreement in science
A co-operation agreement between Chemnitz University of Technology, TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the Carlowitz Society will also be signed at the conference. Rector Prof. Dr Arnold van Zyl (TU Chemnitz), Rector Prof. Dr Bernd Meyer (TU Freiberg) and Dr Füsslein (Carlowitz Society)
The 2nd Sustainability Conference is being organised by the Hans Carl von Carlowitz Society. Since 2011, the society has been endeavouring to bring the name of the great thinker Hans Carl von Carlowitz closer to the people of Chemnitz. The chief mining administrator was born in Oberrabenstein in 1645 and is considered the creator of the concept of sustainability. In his work "Sylvicultura Oeconomica", he described the principles of sustainable forestry 300 years ago.
The 2nd Sustainability Conference is open to visitors. Admission is free.
