Suspected cases of norovirus throughout Saxony
Nine Chemnitz schools will remain closed today and tomorrow
Cases of norovirus are currently occurring throughout Saxony and are suspected due to the acute course of the illness and initial evidence of the pathogen. According to information from the Chemnitz City Health Department, cases of illness of varying intensity have also occurred in various schools in Chemnitz. However, following today's reassessment of the situation by the public health department, it can be assumed that schools will be able to resume normal operations from Monday (1 October 2012).
It has been decided that two Chemnitz grammar schools (André-Gymnasium and Schmidt-Rottluff-Gymnasium) will not be open today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday). Both grammar schools had a comparatively high number of cases, with 100 and 80 respectively reported to the health authorities.
On Thursday evening, the Saxon Education Agency announced the closure of further schools:
- Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Gymnasium
- Dr Wilhelm André Grammar School
- Kleinolbersdorf primary school
- Adelsberg primary school
- Comenius Primary School
- Tereschkowa Primary School
- Glösa primary school
- Ebersdorf Primary School
- Albert Einstein Primary School
The following measures were ordered and implemented yesterday by the city administration: For the eleven schools in which cases of illness have currently occurred, the responsible health department of the city of Chemnitz has investigated the cause and also ordered the subsequent control by means of stool samples and the targeted use of disinfectants. The staff working in the kitchen and serving meals in the schools have already been inspected by the responsible food inspection office.
