Summer semester programme online from Monday

The new programme for the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre's summer semester 2023 will be online from Monday, 5 December at 10 a.m. All courses offered from 6 March 2023 can be searched, found and booked at www.vhs-chemnitz.de.

With currently more than 580 courses from six subject areas, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is once again offering a proven variety in the 2023 summer semester and at the same time invites you to get to know many new courses.

As in previous semesters, Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is offering flexible courses: hybrid courses, i.e. face-to-face classes that can also be attended online regardless of location, will enrich the programme alongside on-site and virtual formats. Continuously positive experiences and high demand contribute to this stabilisation.

The motto "Living more sustainably" is the programme

The summer semester is all about sustainability. As a thematic focus for the entire Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, ideas for a sustainable everyday life characterise the programme: 46 events from all subject areas invite you to discover and participate. In the spirit of high-quality and holistic education, learning is not only understood as the acquisition of knowledge and skills, but also conveys connections as well as new approaches and perspectives. Learning, exchange and individual action are closely interlinked.

With the motto "Living more sustainably", the pressing questions of the present are becoming even more relevant: How do the individual, the environment, the economy and society interact? What knowledge of local and global interrelationships is necessary to protect our natural resources? What ideas and concepts are helpful for this? What can each individual do in everyday (family) life and locally? While Hans Carl von Carlowitz, the chief mining administrator of Saxony, coined the term sustainability over 300 years ago in a forestry sense, the principle formulated there of not consuming more than can grow back is more modern than ever today. The pillars of sustainability include a strong society and an efficient economy that protect and preserve the natural foundations of life for future generations, but also create equal opportunities for education and social prosperity across the generations. This is enshrined in the United Nations 2030 Agenda, among other things.

In order to find and discuss answers and solutions, Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is developing the thematic focus with suitable courses. At the same time, it would like to encourage all course instructors and participants to contribute to sustainable learning at the adult education centre in the TIETZ with their own suggestions.

Sustainability in new formats

A healthy diet from childhood to adulthood is an example of the holistic approach to sustainability, which also includes personal well-being. The programme is characterised by offers on healthy eating for children and young people, new food trends such as meal prepping and practical tips on preserving food. In the tried-and-tested "Living Consciously" series, events on gardening and green fingers, as well as the active protection of insects and birds on our own green spaces and in the city, flank the thematic focus. The film "2040 - We're Saving the World" by David Gameau explores visions for the future of the globe and encourages in-depth discussions.

In the 2023 summer semester, the series on raw material and supply security will continue with theoretical and practical events. Highlights include selected forest excursions or an exploration of the Einsiedel waterworks and dam. Renowned scientists from German and international universities, local experts from consumer advice centres, the Saxony Forestry Department and the state dam administration as well as lecturers with many years of experience guarantee the professional expertise for all courses and events.

Science, data and volunteering

In the "trau.schau.wem?" project for more media literacy, numerous events are dedicated to association work and volunteering. Volunteers receive background knowledge on website design, data security and successful social media work for their initiative or association. Across the specialist areas, the financial basics of association work and practical assistance for everyday volunteer work will also be covered. Courses on cryptocurrencies and smart homes in the digital age promise to be a particular highlight - with a look at the opportunities, technical background and risks.

Creative and on the move

In addition to sustainable ideas such as upcycling, the adult education centre's semester programme also includes rediscovered old craft techniques. In addition to courses on bookbinding and basket weaving, selected tailoring courses are calling out the motto "make new from old".

When the desire to travel increases with the spring sunshine, photography courses, for example on wildlife photography, provide the background knowledge for successful travel memories.

With the right language skills, everyone can get on and get ahead. 16 languages are waiting to be discovered. Swedish or Chinese "for travelling" will set the mood for your trip. With "Cooking and speaking Spanish", Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is offering a tried and tested course that combines immersion in the language of the Iberian Peninsula or Central and South America with special culinary traditions.

Even if something comes up at short notice, registered participants can easily cancel up to six working days before the start of the course. What's more, those who register in good time and find a friend will also help to make the course itself possible.
