Summer holidays at the zoo and wildlife park
New arrivals and births
The summer holidays in Saxony begin next Monday. A good opportunity for the whole family to visit the zoo and wildlife park again in peace and quiet. There are regular short tours on offer, and you can also marvel at the offspring of many species and welcome new arrivals from other zoos.
Short guided tours
The zoo offers short guided tours of certain animal species or groups on weekdays at 11am. The tour starts next Monday, 13 July, with the lions, followed by the parrots on the 14th and the camels on the 15th. The marmosets will be visited on Thursday 16 July and the tropical house one day later on 17 July. The other events can be found on the Internet at www.tierpark-chemnitz.de and in the display case in front of the zoo entrance or can be enquired about at the ticket office.
In the wildlife enclosure there are show feedings on weekdays at 11 a.m.: for lynx and wolves (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays) and for mouflons and wild boar (Tuesdays and Thursdays).
Offspring at the zoo
Over the past few weeks, there have been plenty of offspring at the zoo, which can now be clearly seen. The meerkats are currently rearing their young, a second colt has been born to the Przewalski's horses and a small female ibex is romping around the enclosure. The zookeepers are delighted with the successful breeding of Edward's pheasants, a highly endangered and rarely kept bird species that has been at home at Chemnitz Zoo since 2013 and has now bred for the first time. Further offspring were bred, for example, with the rusty-capped parrots, the blue-eared honeyeaters, the white-crested jays and the white-cheeked geese.
New residents have moved into the tropical house: three Bernier's ducks - one of the rarest duck species in the world and never before kept at Chemnitz Zoo - and a young female spider monkey.
A female bison calf and, with a bit of luck, a female lynx cub can be seen in the wildlife enclosure. Young wild boar, mouflon, red deer and fallow deer can also be seen.
