Memorial stone to Curt Schubert at Münchner Straße 31 stolen
The stumbling block for Curt Schubert, which had been located at Münchner Straße 31 in Chemnitz since 20 September 2016 and commemorated the fate of the KPD member, was broken out of the footpath by unknown persons in the past few days. This was noticed on Wednesday by a member of the Sonnenberg History Working Group.
The city of Chemnitz filed a criminal complaint today, Thursday. The building yard will repair the footpath area. Until a new stumbling block is installed, an anthracite-coloured concrete slab will draw attention to the absence of the stumbling block. This will be placed in the footpath in the next few days.
The next Stumbling Stone laying ceremony will take place on 17 May 2022. It will begin at 11.30 a.m. in the city centre, Börnichsgasse 1. 23 new Stolpersteine will be laid at twelve different locations. More information here.
Curt Schubert, born in 1897, was a KPD member and member of the resistance during the Nazi regime. He worked with the Ernst Enge group against the war and supported Russian forced labourers. He was therefore arrested by the Gestapo in September 1944 and sentenced to death in Waldheim on 11 April 1945. The sentence was not carried out as the Allied armies were already in Waldheim and Curt Schubert was liberated. After the end of the war, in the night from 29 to 30 June 1946, Curt Schubert was murdered near the Wißmannhof.
