Street name "Kalkstraße" extended to Oberfrohnaer Straße
At its meeting today, the city council decided to extend the scope of Kalkstraße to include the new section of the motorway feeder road up to Oberfrohnaer Straße.
The extension of the Kalkstraße motorway feeder road to Oberfrohnaer Straße was opened to traffic on Tuesday, 25 October 2016. The extension of the motorway feeder road has created an additional supra-regional connection to the inner-city road network. The extension of the Kalkstraße feeder road to Oberfrohnaer Straße is part of the traffic development plan and is part of the planned road core network.
The costs for the production and installation of the street name signs totalled approx. 450 euros.
History:
After the incorporation of Rottluff in 1926, the former Bahnhofstraße was renamed Kalkstraße. The name refers to the former lime mining industry in the Chemnitz region. Lime was mined and burnt in Rabenstein for over 600 years and supplied throughout the country. The lime mined here with the simplest of tools was of very good quality and helped the town of Chemnitz to enjoy an economic boom. Mining of the limestone ceased in 1906.
The Felsendome show mine in Chemnitz-Rabenstein still provides vivid evidence of the history of lime mining today.
