Stork nest in Wittgensdorf to be demolished
One of the sights in the Chemnitz district of Wittgensdorf is the stork's nest on an unused chimney that is 29 metres high. Over the years, it has grown to a considerable size: it is estimated to be around one metre high and two metres wide.
One side of the eyrie leans very far over the metal base specially attached for it. In a storm, the eyrie or parts of it could have fallen. For reasons of road safety, as there are buildings all around and an inner courtyard garden adjoins, action must be taken. As the storks arrive very early from their wintering grounds in our region due to the warm weather, we need to act quickly: Tomorrow, therefore, the accumulated branches will be removed down to the eyrie platform by high-altitude climbers on behalf of the Environment Agency.
Over the next few days, the white storks - the male arriving first, followed a few days later by the female - will be able to take possession of their familiar, but now much smaller eyrie for breeding.
