On Monday 17 August, work will begin on installing the lighting project ‘Auf’n Halt – Leuchten & Genießen’ in Innere Klosterstraße. This joint project by Rathaus Passagen, GGG, the City of Chemnitz’s Economic Affairs Department and the Chemnitz City Initiative is a visible example of the city centre’s ongoing development and was awarded prize money of 20,000 euros in the “Ab in die Mitte!” competition. The funding is supplemented by additional investment from the Rathaus Passagen advertising association, GGG and the City of Chemnitz.
In recent years, Innere Klosterstraße has developed into a vibrant dining and entertainment precinct. With the new lighting concept, this area – complementing the lighting installation at the Innere Klosterstraße/Börnichsgasse junction – is now being permanently transformed into an atmospheric experience zone.
The installation comprises creative LED light artworks that invite visitors to linger and explore. This creates a year-round, ever-changing lighting atmosphere that enhances the quality of the visitor experience. Sven Hertwig, site coordinator for the Rathaus Passagen and the Rosenhof in Chemnitz, said: “The lighting installation is intended to create a unique atmosphere that inspires people and gives the street a distinctive character.”
The project makes a further contribution to the city’s overall development. It aims to strengthen the city centre, increase visitor numbers, appeal to new target groups and improve the perception of Chemnitz city centre as a vibrant urban space. This long-term joint project will revitalise the city centre in a sustainable way. It is being implemented in close collaboration with numerous partners from the retail, hospitality, public administration and wider community sectors.
