As part of the series "The City Archive presents", a lecture on the topic of "Stones on and in Chemnitz churches. A chapter of the city's history". The speaker will be geoscientist and historian Dr Dr Frieder Jentsch. Admission is free.
Next year, Chemnitz will be celebrating the 875th anniversary of its first documentary mention. In the document written in 1143, King Konrad III also confirmed the foundation of a Benedictine monastery on today's Schlossberg. A stone church was built here soon afterwards. Decades later, the nearby town of Chemnitz began to develop. The building history of the monastery and town also includes knowledge about the masonry and building stones used. The first churches in particular provide valuable historical information and, in the following period, periods can be identified in which one or other stone was favoured or used exclusively for building purposes. New and rebuilt churches in Chemnitz can be found in almost all periods of the city's history. The "Trail of Stones" can also be used to trace the city's history.
