Stele on the Neumarkt informs about twin cities

Inauguration on the occasion of the "World Twin Cities Day"

Today, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze, together with twinning associations and the Chemnitz Tour Guide Association, inaugurated a stele about Chemnitz's twin towns.

The information board on Neumarkt square provides an overview of Chemnitz's eleven twin towns. Anyone looking at the information stele can find out, for example, where the twin towns are located, how long the partnership has existed and how far away the towns are from Chemnitz.

Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "On International Twin Cities Day, Chemnitz is showing its solidarity with its international partners. We are a well-connected city and the title of European Capital of Culture 2025 will increase this even further. It is important to me to raise awareness of Chemnitz's twin cities once again and that we talk about the exchange we maintain with the twin cities and that we keep renewing these connections and publicising them with campaigns and projects."

The stele was financed by the city centre fund at a cost of around 3,500 euros. It is the first stele in Chemnitz to include a Braille plaque so that visually impaired people can also recognise the eleven city names.

The inauguration programme was performed by the Unity Choir, a group of international singers. They sang their song "Chemnitzer sind wir" for the first time in various languages of the twin cities. The composition was selected and supported as a micro-project of the Capital of Culture.

Background to the information steles

Since 2018, several information steles have been erected in the city centre, including at the Red Tower, the former city gates and the Karl Marx Monument. The project is being implemented by the Mayor's Department with the support of the Chemnitz History Association, the Chemnitz Tour Guide Association and freelance historians.

Further steles are planned for Schloßberg, Stadthalle and Theaterplatz. Citizens have the opportunity to sponsor such an information stele. Anyone who donates at least 250 euros can be named on a stele. Anyone interested can contact the City of Chemnitz Citizens' Office by e-mail at buergerbuero@stadt-chemnitz.de or by telephone on 0371 488 1512.

The next stele will be unveiled on Sunday, 8 May 2022 at 2 pm in the Rosenhof.
