Stele in honour of Marie Luise Pleißner
State Women's Council of Saxony, together with the network of women's initiatives in Chemnitz, dedicates a stele in honour of Marie Luise Pleißner in Chemnitz as part of the "frauenorte sachsen" project
On Monday, 3 September 2018, the memorial stele for Marie-Luise-Pleißner will be inaugurated in Chemnitz at 11 am. As part of the "frauenorte sachsen" project, it will be erected on the corner of Wartburgstraße and Bernsdorfer Straße in Marie-Luise-Pleißner-Park and is intended to honour the life and work of this personality.
The tenth stele in total is dedicated to Marie Luise Pleißner (1891-1983). As a teacher of German, religion and gymnastics, she joined the General German Teachers' Association in 1911 and later became its chairwoman. During the First World War, her pacifist world view began to emerge and solidify. In 1919, she became a member of the German Peace Society, the German League for Human Rights and the International Fellowship of Reconciliation.
She was one of the founding members of a precursor party to the Liberal Democratic Party of Germany, for which she was elected to the Saxon state parliament in 1946. She was a co-founder of the Democratic Women's Association of Germany and gave numerous lectures to peace organisations in Germany and abroad. Shortly before her 90th birthday, she was honoured in the GDR with the "Star of International Friendship" award.
With "frauenorte sachsen", the Landesfrauenrat Sachsen e.V. wants to make Saxony's moving and diverse women's history visible. Since 2016, an advisory board has been selecting women's personalities who have helped to shape Saxony at various levels of society and who should be honoured for this. To honour their special commitment, information boards are erected at the respective places where the women worked. These enable a historical categorisation of their lives and work, a critical examination of gender roles and an insight into Saxony's women's history.
