Statement by the Mayor of Chemnitz Barbara Ludwig on the current status of the Chemnitz Valley Viaduct:

"It is unsatisfactory and disappointing that Dr Grube did not personally address our questions or respond to our request for a meeting. In his response, the Group's authorised representative merely recites the known preliminary decisions and procedural steps.

This is simply impossible because, firstly, the Chemnitz Valley Viaduct is an important architectural monument and, secondly, many citizens and members of parliament have taken a clear position in favour of preserving the structure. They all deserve - not least in the interest of the best possible outcome - a well-founded discussion of the available facts.

I am very grateful that I was able to agree with the three members of the Bundestag, Mr Frank Heinrich, Mr Detlef Müller and Mr Michael Leutert, at the beginning of February that we would work in a broad, cross-party alliance on the issue and try to secure an appointment with Dr Grube."

The Mayor of Chemnitz had approached the Chairman of the Management Board of Deutsche Bahn AG in order to discuss specific options and scope for the project in person with Dr Grube after DB Netz AG submitted the documents for planning approval to the Federal Railway Authority in December 2015.
