Statement by Mayor Barbara Ludwig on the announced closure of the Union Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH production site in Chemnitz
The Lord Mayor of Chemnitz, Barbara Ludwig, is shocked by the news that the Herkules Group, the owner of Union Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH, intends to shut down its production site in Chemnitz. "It is not a good day for Chemnitz when it is foreseeable that 160 years of machine tool manufacturing by Union here at the site will come to an end."
According to the works council, over 100 jobs are at risk. Mayor Ludwig offers the support of the city and the Chemnitz Economic Development Agency: "I would like to offer to support the works council and the workforce in their search for new jobs in Chemnitz. It is important to me that the period of uncertainty for the employees is as short as possible and that they can continue to work and live in Chemnitz wherever possible."
Mayor Ludwig also announced that he would be contacting the management of the Herkules Group once again.
