State hands over funding decision
Konkordiapark receives a football pitch for 150,000 euros - federal government provides 112,500 euros in funding
The city of Chemnitz is receiving 112,500 euros for the expansion of the leisure centre in Konkordiapark. Mayor Barbara Ludwig received a funding notification from State Minister for the Environment Thomas Schmidt on Monday. The money will come from the federal budget of the "Bridges to the Future" programme. The city is contributing 37,500 euros of its own funds so that a football pitch can be added to the existing skate and parkour facility for a total of 150,000 euros.
As with the previous measures, the city's green space department is planning the project together with users. Following on from the proven success story of the Konkordia leisure park, several workshops and discussion rounds involving all interested parties will be organised. Implementation is scheduled for 2017 to 2018.
Konkordia Park is a popular leisure facility for predominantly young users that is known beyond the city limits. It includes a skate park, a pool area, a dirt track, a streetball court and, since 2016, a parkour facility.
Until the year 2000, this was a residential area with gaps between buildings, a high vacancy rate, commercial premises and a former petrol station. As the new castle pond facilities are directly adjacent, the aim was to incorporate them into the park and this was realised step by step. As part of the urban redevelopment ("Socially Integrative City" programme), two entire residential areas were demolished and the first large skate park in Chemnitz was built in 2001, initially on a trial basis.
Thanks to its functionality and fun factor, the resulting facility has made Chemnitz well-known and popular among users far beyond the city limits. Since 2001, the city and funding bodies (Socially Integrative City programme) have invested a total of around 618,000 euros in the open space design of Konkordiapark.
