State election 2014: Citizens can get involved as election workers

The election to the Sixth Saxon State Parliament will take place on Sunday, 31 August 2014 . To ensure that this election is conducted properly, an electoral board will be formed for each of the 161 electoral districts in the city of Chemnitz to ensure that voting runs smoothly and that votes are counted at the respective polling station on election Sunday. A total of 1,500 electoral assistants are needed in Chemnitz for the organisation of the state parliamentary election to work on the electoral board or to head or deputise for the electoral board. Polling stations are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election days.
About the work of the electoral boards: The members of the electoral board meet at the polling station at 7.30 a.m. , receive a short briefing on their tasks and are also divided into working hours and break times, so that they are generally not deployed for the whole day. As in previous elections, the electoral authority therefore endeavours to deploy poll workers close to people's homes. At around 5.30 p.m. , the entire electoral board meets back at the polling station to prepare for and carry out the ascertainment of results. Once the results have been determined, the operation is over.
Poll workers receive a so-called refreshment allowance for their voluntary work on an electoral board: For their work on the general electoral boards, supervisors receive 45 euros, deputies 35 euros and observers 30 euros. For their work on the postal ballot boards, supervisors receive 40 euros, deputies 30 euros and observers 25 euros.

The declaration of willingness can also be handed in at the information points in the town hall, Markt 1, in the Bürgerhaus Am Wall, Düsseldorfer Platz 1, in the Bürger- und Verwaltungszentrum Moritzhof, Bahnhofstraße 53, in the Technical Town Hall, Annaberger Straße 89 as well as in the city's citizen service centres and, of course, at the electoral authority itself, Getreidemarkt 3.
Citizens are also welcome to call the public authority telephone number 115 for information on becoming a polling officer.
The letters of appointment will be sent out approx. 3 to 4 weeks before the election. Citizens who have submitted a declaration of willingness but do not receive a letter of appointment in this period of approx. 3 to 4 weeks before the election must, however, expect that their assignment can still be operationally determined until the Friday before the election.
If there are any changes to the dates stated in the declaration of availability in the meantime, the citizens concerned are requested to inform the electoral authority immediately.
