Starting signal for works of art on the roofs of Europe
Kick-off today in Gothenburg - artist comes to Chemnitz in June
Today sees the launch of a European-scale project in Gothenburg, Sweden, which connects nine cities on the continent - including Chemnitz - in a special artistic way and aims to draw attention to the potential of roof surfaces. The Belgian artist, muralist and sculptor Larsen Bervoets is creating works of art on roof surfaces and will also be coming to Chemnitz as part of the project.
Note for media representatives: On Monday, 5 June, at the start of the campaign in Chemnitz, there will be a press event at which the design will be presented and interviews with the artist will be possible.
After today's kick-off in Gothenburg and a further stay in Rotterdam in May, Bervoets will be working in Chemnitz from 5 to 19 June. His artwork will cover the roof of the Stadthalle's main hall and the two roofs in front of it.
Bervoet's work envisages a colourful, abstract and multi-layered design for Chemnitz. The colours and shapes are repeated in the different cities and thus symbolise the diversity of Europe and at the same time the solidarity of the nine cities of the ECRN.
The "Roofscape Landmark Project" is a joint endeavour of the European Creative Rooftop Network (ECRN), an initiative of various stakeholders from a total of nine European cities that pursue the common goal of developing sustainable and innovative rooftop projects. Chemnitz has been part of the ECRN since 2021.
Together with the cities of Amsterdam, Antwerp, Barcelona, Belfast, Faro, Gothenburg, Nicosia and Rotterdam, the city of Chemnitz will continue to implement local projects on and in the context of rooftops until 2024. Everything is possible, from the creation of new cultural meeting places to innovative ideas that explore sustainability.
One of the joint projects of the ECRN is the creation of a large-scale work of art on a roof, which will be produced in various forms on the roofs of European cities and connect them with each other.
The so-called Landmark Project is being realised by Larsen Bervoets under the name "Roofscape" together with the local population. The street artist, born in Antwerp in 1979, was selected by the European Creative Rooftop Network following an international call for entries in all nine cities.
