Start of work on the cycling track at the Sportforum

Refurbishment of the railway wheelhead and carriageway

On 16 December 2015, Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig received the funding notification from the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior for the renovation of the track cycling head and the track of the cycling track in the Sportforum in the amount of around 834,000 euros. The project is now due to start tomorrow. The start of the work was timed so that the Olympic preparations of the athletes in the track cycling sprint could be guaranteed.

The track head of the cycling track has been badly affected by the weather and is in a very poor condition, so that renovation is urgently required for safety reasons. This is the first construction phase. In addition to the damage to the railway wheelhead, there is also enormous damage to the carriageway, making renovation unavoidable here too. Cracks have recently formed or widened on almost all segments of the carriageway. The carriageway renovation is the second construction phase.

In order to keep the closure times as short as possible, the carriageway is to be refurbished in parallel, depending on the progress of the refurbishment of the railway wheelhead. As marking and coating work is only possible above a temperature limit of five degrees Celsius, the work will probably have to be interrupted during the winter months due to the weather. It is currently expected to take until the end of May 2017.

The total cost of the project is around 1.4 million euros. The federal and state governments are each contributing 30 per cent of the total costs, meaning that the project will receive funding of around 834,000 euros. The city's own funds amount to around 556,000 euros.
