Start of the next construction phase for the four-lane expansion of Zschopauer Straße (B174) in the urban section Südring to Bergfrieden

Changes to traffic routing, particularly at the Georgistraße junction

Tomorrow, Friday, a new construction phase begins for the extensive work on the four-lane expansion of Zschopauer Straße (B 174) in the urban section from Südring to Bergfrieden. The landward extension of the B 174 in the area from Südring to Georgistraße was the most extensive and, in the area of the terraced houses, also the most complex section of the demanding major construction project due to the media located here. This section of Zschopauer Strasse is now being extended towards the city centre. The new construction phase also includes the extension of Georgistraße to Kleinolbersdorfer Straße, further extension work in the area of the building at Zschopauer Straße 298 and the completion of the landward noise barrier above Georgistraße.

The transition to the new construction phase will be delayed due to the exceptionally long winter of 2012/2013 and the heavy rainfall during the June floods in 2013. In view of the outstanding construction period and the upcoming winter season, it is not yet possible to say whether this will have a concrete impact on the planned completion date (26 February 2015). However, the contractor and client are still endeavouring to make up for this delay as far as possible by working in parallel and bringing forward services that are outside the traffic area of the current B 174. It is therefore also planned to carry out work to clear the construction site, lay drinking water, gas and sewerage media and build retaining walls at the same time as the upcoming work in the lower part towards the city on the upper section towards the countryside.

Information on traffic routing: Road users should note the changes to traffic routing and restrictions that will be necessary at the same time as the start of the next construction phase. Once the expansion of the rural carriageways in the Südring section up to after the Georgistraße junction has been completed, traffic will be routed via these new road sections with immediate effect, thus creating the conditions for the subsequent expansion of the urban carriageways in this section.

In particular, the new traffic routing will also result in changes at the Georgistraße junction: in addition to the already restricted access to Georgistraße, the exit onto Zschopauer Straße must also be prohibited. Public transport is exempt from the restriction.

Detours are possible towards the city centre via Kleinolbersdorfer Straße / Otto-Thörner-Straße and towards the country via Dreiserstraße / Cervantesstraße / Südring or Adelsbergstraße / Südring. Residents are asked for their understanding for these disruptions.

With the four-lane expansion of Zschopauer Straße, this main road will be upgraded to cope with the increasing volume of traffic. Up to 25,000 vehicles already use this route every day. Forecasts predict that this figure will rise to around 34,000 vehicles per day. The project, which is being financed by the state and local authorities, is worth around 20 million euros.
