Start of the conversion of the Reichenhainer Straße/Altchemnitzer Straße junction into a roundabout
Next Monday, 11 July 2016, extensive road and civil engineering work will begin on Reichenhainer Straße in the area of the Südbahnhof.
The existing Altchemnitzer Straße/Reichenhainer Straße junction, which is controlled by a traffic light system, will be replaced by a roundabout in future. Fraunhoferstrasse and Elsässer Strasse will also be connected to this roundabout. The future connection between Reichenhainer Straße and Südring will then run via Fraunhoferstraße, Werner- Seelenbinder-Straße and F.-O.-Schimmel-Straße.
The roundabout will have an inner radius of 32 metres. Reichenhainer Straße, Elsasser Straße, Altchemnitzer Straße and Fraunhoferstraße will join the roundabout at right angles. The roundabout will have a trafficable inner ring of three metres and a circular carriageway with a width of 5.25 metres. Lane dividers with a width of 2.50 metres will be installed in the approaching traffic arms of Reichenhainer Straße, Altchemnitzer Straße and Fraunhoferstraße. The lane dividers serve as crossing aids for pedestrians. The road width is made up of two 3.75 metre lanes, one lane divider and one cycle lane per lane. The remaining areas towards the side buildings will be developed as footpaths. The construction area will be newly equipped with all media such as sewerage, electricity, gas, drinking water / extinguishing water, lighting and communication.
The construction work is being carried out and coordinated jointly by the Chemnitz Civil Engineering Office, eins energie in sachsen GmbH & Co. KG and ESC.
At the same time, ESC is also constructing a rainwater overflow structure in Reichenhainer Straße at the level of Südbahnstraße. The Lutherstraße/Fraunhoferstraße junction will also be widened and fitted with a traffic light system.
The work will begin with clearing the construction site and relocating utilities in Reichenhainer Strasse and Görresstrasse in order to create space for the rainwater overflow structure. The work in Görrestraße will be carried out in sections, taking into account the access routes for neighbours. The junction will then be reconstructed.
During the entire construction period, one lane will be maintained for traffic travelling out of the city. Traffic travelling into the city will be diverted on a large scale as part of the ongoing measures for the Chemnitz Model in Reichenhainer Straße.
The construction work is to be completed at the same time as the extension of Fraunhoferstraße to Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße (also connected by a roundabout), which is already under construction. This is scheduled for May 2017.
The construction costs of the project amount to around 2.2 million euros.
EUROVIA Verkehrsbau Union GmbH, Gewerbestraße 10 in 04420 Markranstädt/OT Frankenheim, was commissioned with the construction work.
The construction project is being subsidised by the Free State of Saxony to the tune of 80 percent as part of the municipal road and bridge construction funding programme.
