Start of renovation of playground in the city park on Beckerstrasse
From next week, construction work will begin on the playground in the city park, the "Clausschen Park", on Beckerstrasse. This was closed following renewed flood damage.
The playground is one of the oldest in the city. It was laid out over 100 years ago by the horticultural director at the time, Otto Werner, and has been renovated several times since then. Flooded for the first time during the 2002 flood and repaired, it was flooded again in 2010. Before it could be renovated, it was damaged again by flooding in 2013.
As the city park is a listed building and is partially at risk of flooding, general conditions must be observed during the renovation planning and the relevant authorities must be involved. After the second flood damage, it was decided to install a smaller play area outside the flood zone, as it was not possible to find an alternative location nearby. The playground is therefore still one of the play options along the Chemnitz river that families can reach on foot or by bike on the Heinrich-Sturm-Weg. Benches will continue to invite people to linger.
The Parks Department is investing 58,000 euros in the renovation of the playground in the city park.
The city of Chemnitz is receiving financial support from a donation of 1,000 euros from the German Red Cross. Completion is scheduled for spring 2015. Landschaftsgestaltung GmbH from Annaberg was commissioned with the renovation of this facility.
