Start of construction work on Fürstenstrasse
Construction of a new centre island and barrier-free expansion of the bus stops at Uhlandstraße
On 8 March 2016, roadworks will begin on Fürstenstraße in the Uhlandstraße area. The construction work includes the barrier-free conversion of the two bus stops, the replacement of the mobile crossing aid with a permanent solution that complies with the regulations as well as increasing the load-bearing capacity of the road structure in the bus arrival and departure areas.
These measures will significantly improve road safety, especially for schoolchildren at the neighbouring secondary school and people with limited mobility. A central island with two crossing points will be installed at the beginning and end of the bus stops.
The reconstruction affects the carriageway and the footpaths on both sides over a length of 42 metres. Special surface courses will be used in the carriageway to cope with the increased loads caused by the braking and starting processes of the buses. These surface courses require curing times before being put into operation, which must be taken into account in the construction process. There will therefore be periods without construction activities during the construction work. Completion is scheduled for May 2016.
The construction project will be carried out in two construction phases (city-facing and land-facing side) with half-side closures. Traffic will be controlled by a traffic light system with pedestrian signalling. Bus and pedestrian traffic will be guaranteed throughout. During the construction period, the bus stops will be moved slightly in the landward direction and set up as temporary stops.
BS-UNI-Bau GmbH from Chemnitz was commissioned to carry out the construction work. The construction costs amount to around 145,000 euros. The project is being subsidised by the Free State of Saxony to the tune of 75,000 euros.
