Start of construction work at the Sportforum: Renovation of the throwing and kicking area in the multi-purpose athletics hall
On Monday (14 April), a planned construction project to renovate the throwing and impact area in the multi-purpose athletics hall at the Sportforum will begin. The renovation and remodelling work to be carried out here will upgrade the wall and floor surfaces damaged by the intensive ball impacts. The construction work will create and secure the conditions absolutely necessary for continuous training and competition in the throwing/shooting discipline group at the Chemnitz national athletics centre. At present, the throwing and jumping area only allows for limited training and competition. After many years of use, the shot put mats (special mats) and throwing tarpaulins are so worn that they no longer meet the requirements for training and competition in high performance sport.
The construction work, which is due to be completed by the beginning of June, involves an investment of around 259,300 euros, subsidised by the federal and state governments. The companies polytan Sportstättenbau GmbH and Erhard Sport Projekte GmbH have been commissioned to carry out the work.
There are currently 30 squad athletes training at the national centre in Chemnitz. The focus is on the throwing/jumping discipline group, which includes the two-time world champion and Olympic silver medallist David Storl, who recently crowned his top performances at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Sopot, Poland, with the runner-up world title in the shot put.
In addition to an obligatory tradition and impressive achievements, competitive sport in Chemnitz today also has a solid basis in grassroots sport: around 33,100 members, including 10,800 children and young people, are involved in Chemnitz sports clubs. Sports enthusiasts in Chemnitz can choose from over 220 sports clubs with more than 80 different types of sport, The Federal Ministry of the Interior and the top professional association have designated the throwing and jumping disciplines as a recognised federal base in athletics.
