Start of construction work for redesigning and upgrading the Brühl Boulevard
Next Monday, construction work will begin on the Georgstraße to Elisenstraße section of Brühl Boulevard to improve accessibility, enhance the quality of life and improve the design of the public thoroughfare.
Development potential in the "Quartier der Generationen" is to be redefined, particularly in view of the planned city centre expansion of the Technical University site in the Alte Aktienspinnerei. The Brühl between Zöllnerstrasse and Unterer Aktienstrasse will be designated as a traffic-calmed area in future. The section up to Georgstrasse will remain a pedestrian zone as before.
The section to be redesigned, including the junctions, has a length of around 400 metres and widths of between 22 and 24 metres. The construction work includes all measures necessary for the introduction of mixed traffic in terms of traffic organisation as well as all design services.
The future motor vehicle lanes will be upgraded accordingly and bordered with equipment elements, taking into account the necessary widths for rescue and disposal vehicles. Further planting will be used to create complete greening axes. Existing unplanted or overgrown planting areas will be replanted.
Access points that were previously not barrier-free will be dismantled and provided with appropriate ramps.
The locations with sculptures will be retained. The Brühl luminaires will be upgraded to provide the necessary traffic area illumination.
Bollards will be installed to protect the equipment (trees, lights) and new benches and seating elements will be installed to improve the quality of the area.
A child-friendly recreation area will be set up in front of the primary school.
From 22 February 2016, tree felling work and redesign work will be carried out on the platforms. In general, the construction site is not expected to be continuous. Rather, the project is made up of many individual measures that will be cordoned off separately. Completion is planned for the end of November 2016.
The company Grätsch & Söhne GmbH from Chemnitz was commissioned with the construction work. The construction costs amount to approx. 590,000 euros. A third of the construction costs will be provided from the federal and state programme "Active city and district centres".
