Start of construction: Redesign of the Campusplatz open space on Reichenheiner Straße
Work to redesign the Campusplatz open space on behalf of the City of Chemnitz will begin on schedule today, Monday 6 March. As part of the overall Chemnitz Model project on Reichenhainer Straße in the third construction phase between Dittesstraße and Wartburgstraße, the measure to redesign the campus square between the lecture theatre buildings and the canteen and student union will be realised.
After completion of the project, which is expected in December 2017, the existing areas will be redesigned into a traffic-calmed business area as a 20 km/h zone with a high amenity value. The approx. 10,500 m² area of the campus square between the lecture theatre building / Rühlmannbau to the west of Reichenhainer Straße and the canteen / Thüringer Weg to the east of Reichenhainer Straße will be paved with lightened asphalt. This area will be edged with a passe-partout of dark-coloured stone slabs.
The new tram tracks will cross the future campus square in a central location. The barrier-free tram stops, which are designed for both the City Link vehicles and the CVAG Variobahn trams, will be built directly on the track. A new public transport interface between bus and train will be created at the new "Campusplatz" stop.
In addition to the tree planting at the stops, 60 new plane trees will also be planted on Campusplatz. The design idea of the tree avenue will thus be transferred to the future square. It is also planned to install groups of furniture consisting of benches, city sofas and tables with awnings. In addition, equipment elements such as bicycle stands and passenger shelters in a modern design will characterise the image of the square.
The costs for the remodelling of the campus square amount to around 3.2 million euros and are being financed by the city of Chemnitz with the support of subsidies from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).ARGE Eurovia Verkehrsbau Union NL Leipzig/ Dresden and Wolff und Müller Straßen- und Tiefbau GmbH & Co.KG Dresden were commissioned to carry out the construction work.
All work along Reichenhainer Straße will be carried out under full road closure. Wartburgstraße, Bernsdorfer Straße and Lutherstraße are planned as diversion routes. An asphalt carriageway in the area of the former tree-lined avenue has already been in place for local traffic since the beginning of February.
Parking along Reichenhainer Straße, Rosenbergstraße and Thüringer Weg will no longer be possible during the construction work. For this reason, temporary car parks have been set up behind the lecture theatre building. Residents' car parks will also be available on Fraunhoferstraße from the start of the works.
