Start of construction on the new long-distance bus terminal
Dresdner Straße will be reduced to two lanes in the course of the project
Work on the construction of the new long-distance bus terminal on Dresdner Straße begins today. This work will initially take place outside the road, so there will be no traffic restrictions in this area.
In the course of the construction work, it will be necessary to reduce Dresdner Straße to two lanes. Information on the timing of this will be provided in good time. A traffic-dependent pedestrian traffic light will be installed at the crossing to the existing pedestrian tunnel at Peterstraße. A traffic-dependent three-way traffic light will be installed temporarily at the junction with Gießerstraße.
The new long-distance bus terminal on Dresdner Straße will have four bus platforms with bus stop islands arranged at an angle. The buses will approach from the landward direction and exit in the cityward direction.
Passengers will reach the bus platforms via a widened pavement. A partial canopy provides protection from the weather.
There will also be a car park with 33 parking spaces, including two disabled parking spaces, three parking spaces for Kiss+Ride, four parking spaces for taxis, one car-sharing parking space and two charging spaces for electric cars. Twelve bicycle boxes with charging facilities for e-bikes will also be built - in addition to the existing 48 bicycle parking spaces under the roof of the tunnel extension.
The long-distance bus terminal, the car park and Dresdner Straße along the terminal will be equipped with new street lighting.
The construction work will be carried out in three phases. In construction phase 1, the road to the entrance to the long-distance bus terminal will be built in the area of the existing access to the electronic signal box (ESTW), including the canal connection to the ESC network. In construction phase 2, the bus platforms and their adjacent lanes and walkways, including the canopies, will be built. And in construction phase 3, the short-term car park, the exit with adjoining footpath and the road surface of the city-side public transport stop will be built.
Ten trees along Dresdner Straße will have to be felled for the construction of the long-distance bus terminal. As a replacement, 33 trees will be planted directly on the site of the long-distance bus terminal.
The costs for the new long-distance bus terminal total approx. 2.87 million euros. The construction project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2024.
In October 2022, the city council decided to build a new long-distance bus terminal on Dresdner Straße. In March 2022, the city council had already passed a resolution in principle to bundle the public transport systems at the main railway station.
The future central bus station, which will be built on the main station forecourt after 2025, will be supplemented by the long-distance bus terminal on Dresdner Straße. The new pedestrian tunnel with access at the main station will provide a good link between long-distance, regional and local road and rail transport.
