Start of construction of the Inselsteig bridge over the Zwönitz
Construction of a bypass by the end of the year
Next Monday, construction work will begin on the replacement of the Inselsteig bridge, which was approved by the city council in November 2016 (PM no. 664/2016). The first step is to create a new bypass. The bridge will provide access to Inselsteig, which branches off directly from the Am Zwönitzufer road. The current vehicle bridge is only passable to a limited extent with a maximum of nine tonnes. Due to the structural condition and the implementation of flood protection measures, a new replacement bridge is required.
Work to bypass the bridge will begin on Monday. The bypass road begins directly at the "An der Walzenmühle" bridge and then runs in a southerly direction parallel to the Zwönitz as far as the Inselsteig. It has a length of around 250 metres and a carriageway width of 3.50 metres. There are passing places every 50 metres.
The Inselsteig bridge is a vehicle bridge with a tonnage limit of nine tonnes. This results in restricted access to the buildings for supply and waste disposal companies as well as for emergency services and the fire brigade, as there is no other connection.
The structural condition of the bridge and the fact that the lower edge of the structure is submerged during flooding make it necessary to build a new replacement, which is planned for next year. During the planning phase, various options for rebuilding the bridge were analysed. In the evaluation of the variants, a bypass for motor vehicle traffic and a new pedestrian bridge on the Inselsteig will be implemented.
This will enable the best possible coordination of flood safety requirements, improved access to the developments, construction technology (existing bypass for new bridge construction) and construction costs.
The first measure in 2017 will be the construction of the bypass for the Inselsteig bridge. Construction will take around four months. As part of the construction work, the utility company inetz will clear the construction site and renew the gas, drinking water and electricity supplies. The new bypass route will also be fitted with lighting.
The construction costs for the bypass amount to around 200,000 euros. This measure is being fully subsidised with funds from the federal government and the state of Saxony. The construction company EBG Bau GmbH Ehrenfriedersdorf was commissioned to carry out the construction project.
