Start of construction of roundabout on Stollberger Straße
Expansion of the Stollberger Straße/Neukirchner Straße/Friedrich-Viertel-Straße junction
On Monday, 11 September 2017, road construction work will begin at the junction of Stollberger Straße/Neukirchner Straße/Friedrich-Viertel-Straße. The junction will be converted into a roundabout.
In its current state, the junction has major deficits in terms of efficiency and road safety. These deficits are to be eliminated with the conversion to a roundabout. In addition to shortening waiting times, especially for left-turners from the side streets, visibility and traffic conditions will generally be improved.
Pedestrians are to be guided safely and barrier-free through the construction of new pavements in the junction area and the creation of carriageway dividers as crossing aids at all junction approaches.
The Stollberger Straße/Neukirchner Straße/Friedrich-Viertel-Straße roundabout will have an outer diameter of 34 metres. The width of the roundabout carriageway is six metres.
Both junction branches of Stollberger Straße and Neukirchner Straße will be extended approx. 90 metres before and after the roundabout, while Friedrich-Viertel-Straße will be extended by approx. 70 metres. In the southern branch of Stollberger Straße in the direction of the city centre and in Neukirchner Straße in the direction of the roundabout, barrier-free bus stops will be installed as kerbside stops. In future, the stops will be used by the city bus routes 26 and 93 as well as the regional routes 200, 201 and 262.
The roundabout will be built in four construction phases, with traffic on Stollberger Straße being maintained at all times. Until the beginning of November, two lanes of traffic will be maintained, after which traffic will be managed on one side with traffic lights.
Neukirchner Straße must be closed to private traffic during the entire construction period. A diversion will be set up via Stollberger Straße - Südring - Neefestraße - Jagdschänkenstraße. Friedrich-Viertel-Straße will also be fully closed for the entire construction period. The estate can be reached via Wolgograder Allee.
Access to the neighbouring petrol station on Stollberger Straße will remain open.
The construction work should be completed in June 2018.
Chemnitzer Verkehrsbau GmbH has been commissioned to carry out the construction work.
The construction costs of the measure amount to around 850,000 euros. This project is being subsidised by the Free State of Saxony with 665,000 euros as part of the funding programme for municipal road and bridge construction.
