Start of construction of new co-operation school
Special focus on sustainable construction
On Monday, 30 August, the first preparatory work will begin on the site on Heinrich-Schütz-Straße on the former barracks site between the Terra Nova Campus and the Zeisigwaldkliniken Bethanien. The new school building for a two-form entry primary and secondary school is due to open for the 2023/24 school year.
The planned new school building will form a new campus together with the existing school complex, the Terra Nova Campus. The planned new school building is to be built as a "special kind of school", the Kooperationsschule Chemnitz, a state school for grades 1 to 10 with all-day programmes and after-school care. This type of school is an inclusive school.
The school complex is to be built as a three-storey building with an adjoining two-court sports hall. It forms a self-contained square due to its location, the connecting corridors and bicycle parking spaces, covered break areas and the canopies of the school and after-school care centre entrances.
The area for primary school pupils is located in the northern part of the building and the area for secondary school pupils in the southern part. An atrium will be located in the transition to the sports hall.
The building project also includes the construction of a two-field sports hall with a grandstand for approx. 200 spectators and the possibility for club sports. Sports and recreational areas will also be created.
Special attention is being paid to sustainable construction in the new school project. In addition to the use of geothermal energy and a photovoltaic system, a retention roof ensures that rainwater is retained on the roof surfaces.
In May 2021, the Chemnitz City Council approved the construction of the cooperation school as a two-form entry primary and secondary school at the Heinrich-Schütz-Straße site.
The construction costs amount to around 34 million euros and will be financed entirely by the City of Chemnitz's own funds. Funding for the project has been applied for.
