Start of construction for new lift at Wittgensdorf school

Next public square for the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025

Tomorrow, a scaffolding tower is to be erected at the Kirchner Primary School in Wittgensdorf so that construction work on an artistically designed lift can begin on Monday 12 September. First of all, the window parapets for the future access doors to the lift will be demolished. The civil engineering work for the excavation of the foundations will then begin on 4 October. At the same time, the basement of the building will be drained. The project is being carried out in consultation with the school management.

After the market fountain in Chemnitz city centre and the Euba fairground, this is the third of 17 public spaces that will be implemented as intervention areas as part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.

During the application phase for the European Capital of Culture, local councils and citizens' platforms were asked by the city administration to think with the people in their areas about where events could take place in the European Capital of Culture year 2025 and what structural conditions would need to be created for this. Up to 325,000 euros are available for each citizens' platform area and each locality.

In Wittgensdorf, the event series "Big Art in Small Places" has been taking place since 1974. Guests at the more than 100 events have included soloists from the Berlin State Opera, choirs, renowned actors and top instrumentalists. The "small" and only place in Wittgensdorf where such large events can take place is the auditorium of the Kirchner primary school. However, due to the steep stairs, it is not accessible to everyone. So the local council came up with the idea of using an artistically designed lift to make the events accessible to everyone.

To commemorate the German composer and namesake of the primary school - Theodor Fürchtegott Kirchner - a piano keyboard will also be painted on the outside wall of the lift.
