Start of construction for future Wolgograder Allee / Chemnitzer Straße roundabout next week
The conversion of the Wolgograder Allee / Chemnitzer Straße junction into a roundabout will begin next Tuesday. The conversion to a roundabout is intended to make the flow of traffic on Wolgograder Allee smoother and therefore more fluid. The roundabout will be integrated into the existing junction. Paved areas that are no longer required will be unsealed. The junction is currently still operated by a traffic light system in need of refurbishment. The carriageway is also in a structurally poor condition, making it necessary to renew the junction.
The roundabout has a total diameter of 29 metres with a driving width of 6 metres. Pedestrian islands with pedestrian crossings were installed in the side arms. The existing footpaths will be adapted to the planned footpaths around the roundabout. Three new lights will be installed in the side area to illuminate the roundabout. The Alfred-Neubert-Straße bus stop will be modernised and made barrier-free.
Work will begin on 7 April 2015 with the construction of temporary footpaths and bus stops to ensure pedestrian and bus traffic can continue throughout the construction period. The road construction work will begin on 09.04.2015. In the first construction phase (lasting approx. six weeks), the southern semi-circle will be constructed. Chemnitzer Straße will be closed as far as Alfred-Neubert-Straße.
For bus routes 22 and 52, a connection between Wolgograder Allee and Chemnitzer Straße will be established via the car park and the "Kaufland" delivery access road. This means that these bus routes can be maintained without restrictions. Individual traffic for this connection will be rerouted over a wide area. During the construction of the northern semi-circle, traffic will be routed via the already completed area with traffic lights on three sides.
The roundabout is scheduled for completion by the end of June. The costs of the project amount to around 385,000 euros. The Free State of Saxony is subsidising this project as part of the municipal road and bridge construction programme with around 247,000 euros.
