Start of a traffic test on the railway road
Traffic calming measure begins at the end of May
The traffic and civil engineering office is expected to carry out a traffic trial on the railway road from the end of May. Over a period of one year (with the option to extend for a further year), the carriageway cross-section will be narrowed in sections with greenery. The aim is to test whether this reduces through traffic and results in a measurable traffic calming effect.
On the railway road, alternating narrow sections will be created with planted islands. This will reduce the lane cross-section from 8 metres to between 6.80 and 4.95 metres. There are sufficiently long meeting points for traffic between the narrow sections. Heavy goods vehicles/buses and cyclists can also meet safely at the narrowest narrowing. When two cars or cars with heavy goods vehicles meet, mutual consideration may have to be shown or priority may have to be given.
The traffic trial will be accompanied by a large number of traffic surveys (cross-section counts with side radar, number plate surveys).
This measure was presented at two public meetings and at meetings with stakeholders. The City of Chemnitz is currently planning further measures to eliminate possible through traffic, e.g. signposting is to be adapted. As a first step, the destination "Zwickauer Straße" will be crossed out on all signposts.
Background
In March 2022, Chemnitz City Council decided that Part III (Neefestraße to Zwickauer Straße) and Part V (Zwickauer Straße to Kalkstraße) of the Südverbund would not be realised and that the Bahnstraße/Stelzendorfer Straße route and the existing open spaces should therefore be developed further. (B-203/2021).
The road from Neefestraße to Zwickauer Straße is currently categorised as a priority road in the main road network and - due to its location - combines both a collector and an access function with a superimposed connecting function. The existing conditions (traffic volumes, traffic composition, speeds) are usual for this.
Neighbouring residents would like traffic to be calmed. However, the road will remain structurally as it is. Local road users can and may continue to use this road in the future.
Keyword traffic trial
A traffic trial is a temporary instrument with which planned traffic safety and traffic regulation measures can be analysed and tested in a pilot project. The legal basis for a corresponding traffic authority order is Section 45 (1) sentence 2 no. 6 of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO).
