Stairs on Hohe Strasse to be rebuilt
Construction work starts at the beginning of October and lasts until mid-December
On Wednesday, 4 October, work will begin on demolishing and rebuilding the staircase between Hohe Strasse and the extended footpath to Bierbrücke. The condition of the steps has deteriorated noticeably in recent years, so much so that they even had to be closed last winter for road safety reasons. It is currently labelled with a notice advising cautious use.
The staircase currently consists of eight concrete stair segments with railings on both sides. The new staircase will be built in the same place. The steps will be slightly widened to the maximum extent possible without interfering with the existing old trees. The new staircase will be fitted with modern lighting in the handrail.
The construction work is expected to last until mid-December 2023. The staircase will remain fully closed during the construction period. The pedestrian diversion between Hohe Straße and Bierbrücke will be via the Kaßberg driveway.
PE Pflasterbau from Schneeberg was commissioned with the construction work. The costs totalled 226,000 euros.
Hohe Straße is located in the centre of Chemnitz and runs along the park between Weststraße/Kaßbergauffahrt and Henriettenstraße. This section includes House 2 of the Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Gymnasium and the Arthur e. V. cultural centre.
