Stained glass windows in the Green Parlour are being restored
Over the next few weeks, individual repairs and restorations will be carried out in the New Town Hall.
From 14 October, three round arches and a neo-Gothic pointed arch window will be removed from the Green Salon - one of the most prestigious rooms in the New Town Hall. Their wooden frames are to be completely renewed in pine wood by the Stanzel joinery in Grünhainichen and the ornate lead glazing will be refurbished in the meantime. A window pane will be placed in front of the leaded glass. In addition to protecting the lead art, this also provides the thermal insulation required today.
Incidentally, the leaded glass windows originally used in the construction of the town hall were shattered by pressure waves from bomb detonations during the Second World War. They had to be replaced in the 1950s according to the historical model. In the recent past, the city has tackled their restoration in line with the preservation order. In the run-up to the 100th anniversary of the town hall in 2011, for example, leaded glass windows in the town council chamber and council chamber were refurbished in line with the requirements of listed buildings.
For the upcoming reconstruction, the carpenters have to remove the windows and close their openings with chipboard for the duration of the work. Restoration work of this kind requires exceptional craftsmanship, as not only must the utility value be restored using authentic materials, but the original appearance must also be preserved.The joinery in Grünhainichen, which can look back on more than 100 years of craftsmanship and has worked on restorations at Lichtenwalde Castle, among others, is currently preparing for this commission from the Chemnitz city council. Materials have to be ordered and a model object built for the monument protection programme.
The Chemnitz-based company Grötschel will erect scaffolding on the town hall façade from 14 November to install the renewed windows. The installation should be completed by 16 November. The city's building management estimates that this renovation of the windows, which is in keeping with the preservation order, will cost around 42,000 euros.
Historical
The Green Parlour, named after its green-stained wood panelling in the 1960s, is located between the City Council Chamber and the Council Chamber. The parlour once served as a refreshment room for the city councillors, who spent their meeting breaks here. Today, the prestigious room is used for receptions organised by the city, including many to mark entries in the Golden Book.
Repairs after water damage
Repairs will be necessary to a damaged area on the roof of the New Town Hall from 14 October. Water damage had occurred here after heavy rainfall, which is now affecting the brickwork. To carry out these roof repairs, the company Söll will be erecting scaffolding on the Neumarkt façade from 8 October. From 14 October to 8 November, the Chemnitz-based company K.-H. Wehr GmbH will then repair the damaged areas on the roof and at the same time install a drainage system that can also drain off large quantities of rainwater. A gutter heating system will also be installed in this area to ensure sufficient water drainage even in the event of large amounts of snow. The roof repairs are estimated at 23,500 euros.
