From Wednesday 1 October, scaffolding will be erected on the front of the New Town Hall. It is three metres deep and will be positioned around the corner by the figure of Roland. The scaffolding is necessary in order to reinstall the new windows, including the restored stained glass in the Council Chamber, which have been manufactured according to historical models. This installation work will begin on 6 October and is expected to continue until 17 October.
A photo opportunity is available for media representatives: On Tuesday, 14 October, 11 a.m., there will be an opportunity to observe the work in the Council Chamber.
Background
Originally, the historic stained glass was to be refurbished due to the effects of the weather and the associated ageing. After the Schmidt joinery from Oldersleben and Domglas Naumburg dismantled and inspected the glazing in June 2024, it became clear that the overall stability had deteriorated to such an extent that a simple overhaul would no longer be sufficient to reinstall the windows properly. It was therefore necessary to reframe the glazing, including the entire lead netting, and have the windows remodelled according to the historical model.
The actual windows will be replaced as part of the gradual modernisation of the town hall, which will also improve thermal and sound insulation.
The work was carried out in close consultation with the Dresden State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments and the Chemnitz Monument Protection Authority. The costs for the entire project amount to around 230,000 euros and will be financed from the municipal budget.
The scaffolding is scheduled to be removed on 20 and 21 October.
