Staggered exchange of paper driving licences for those born between 1953 and 1964
Chemnitz citizens born between 1953 and 1964 will have to exchange their old paper driving licence in 2022 and 2023. The exchange has been staggered for this purpose. The citizens' office of the city of Chemnitz points this out.
Those paper driving licences whose holders were born between 1953 and 1958 must be exchanged by 19 July 2022. By 19 January 2023, all paper driving licences whose holders were born between 1959 and 1964 must be exchanged.
Driving licences can only be exchanged by making an appointment in advance, either by calling the authorities on 115, Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., or by sending an email to fuehrerscheinumtausch(at)stadt-chemnitz.de. In addition to the request, the surname, first name, date of birth, driving licence number and - if the driving licence was not issued in Chemnitz/Karl-Marx-Stadt - the authority that issued it at the time must be stated. A confirmation with the exact appointment time and the respective appointment number will then be sent back by e-mail.
Background:
After the third EU driving licence directive comes into force, all driving licences issued before 19 January 2013 must be exchanged for a new EU driving licence by 19 January 2033. The exchange for paper licences depends on the year of birth of the licence holder.
