Stadthalle Chemnitz becomes a congress centre
At its meeting today, the City Council approved an investment grant from the City of Chemnitz to C³ Chemnitzer Veranstaltungszentren GmbH for the expansion of the congress area at Stadthalle Chemnitz. This means that € 7.75 million has been earmarked for the 2019/2020 budget. Of this, € 5 million will be used to expand the premises of the small hall into a congress centre and € 2.75 million to renovate the existing Stadthalle building. The City of Chemnitz's investment in C³ Veranstaltungszentren GmbH will be financed in two annual instalments. In 2019, the investment grant amounts to €6.55 million, while €1.2 million is planned for 2020.
The aim is to convert and expand the Stadthalle Chemnitz into a modern, needs-oriented and functional congress centre. The existing listed building fabric is to be optimally preserved and supplemented. In addition, the unrenovated parts of the building are to be modernised. This will also finalise the gradual refurbishment of the town hall complex, which has been ongoing for several years. Following this completion, residents and visitors to the city of Chemnitz will have access to an efficient, modern and completely refurbished city hall and congress centre in the city centre from 2020.
The expansion of the congress area of the Stadthalle is conceivable as a project in three independent modules. Module 1, which is to be realised with investment funds from the City of Chemnitz, includes an extension and conversion of the small foyer including four additional conference rooms. The implementation of two further possible modules is optional: the integration of the existing congress area of the "Dorinth" hotel and the conversion of previously unused areas of the hotel.
The measures in module 1 extend the existing building at the Kleiner Saal. The entrance area will be enlarged and equipped with cloakrooms, a registration area and toilets. The previously external lift and staircase will be moved inside as part of the extension. It is also planned to integrate the orchestra rehearsal room, which has hardly been used to date, into the public area. This and the previous shop areas on the ground floor are to be converted into conference rooms. At the same time, the interior around the large hall will be modernised. This will involve replacing the lighting, painting, refurbishing the walls and ceilings and installing new furniture. The exterior façade of the large hall will also be refurbished.
