Spring in the park by the castle pond: "Schilling's figures" are unveiled again
Next Tuesday, the valuable "Schilling figures" in the park at Chemnitz Castle Pond will be freed from their winter protection, the so-called enclosure, and can then be admired again in all their beauty.
Media representatives who would like to capture this unveiling in pictures are invited to the on-site event on Tuesday, 8 April 2014 . The work to remove the acrylic glass protection from the four sculpture groups will begin at 10 am.
After the enclosures have been removed by Kran Walther and employees of the Parks Department, the protective covers will then be checked in the Parks Department's technical workshops and repaired if necessary, graffiti removed and the frames given a new coat of paint.
The "Schilling Figures" are among the artistic and sculptural gems from the classicist period that are known far beyond Chemnitz. The four groups of figures were created as allegories of the times of day by the well-known sculptor Johannes Schilling (1828-1910) from Mittweida. The sculptures made of Postelwitz Elbe sandstone symbolise the times of day "The Morning", "The Noon", "The Evening" and "The Night". In 1905, the originals made of Postelwitz sandstone were replaced by bronze casts (duplicates) on Brühl's Terrace in Dresden and Chemnitz received the more valuable originals.
The city of Chemnitz extensively renovated the important sculptures in 2011, investing 86,200 euros in the process.
