Spring at the zoo: Numerous visitors and first offspring
The predominantly fine weather in the first quarter has brought many visitors to the zoo. Almost 29,000 people have visited the zoo so far in 2014, which is more than twice as many as the previous year (11,400). The wildlife enclosure has also enjoyed a good response with around 9,000 visitors (2013: 5,400).
The young animal season has now also begun. A male Bactrian camel foal was born on 29 March. Mother Siri is calm, it is her fourth foal, father is stallion Dschingis. Mother and child can already be seen outside at lunchtime.
The foal will be given a name at Easter. Suggestions will be accepted from now until 14 April by e-mail, post or fax to the zoo(tierpark(at)stadt-chemnitz.de or 0371- 8577693). A small jury of zoo staff will select the name, the winner will be notified and receive a small surprise.
The capybaras, which spend the winter months in the Tropical House, have moved back to their summer residence, the South America enclosure. Here they form an animal flat-sharing community with nandus and alpacas. There are currently only two females at the zoo, the male was recently given to a Czech zoo and a new one will soon be added.
