Sportforum: City invests around 268,000 euros for construction work in the impact and throwing area of the multi-purpose athletics hall
The city of Chemnitz is investing around 268,000 euros in a construction project in the multi-purpose athletics hall at the Chemnitz Sports Forum. The decision to renovate the jumping and throwing area in the multi-purpose hall will secure and significantly improve the training conditions at the national throwing/jumping centre in Chemnitz.
The national throwing/jumping centre for athletics has been confirmed by the Federal Ministry in Chemnitz until 2016. The sports facility in the multi-purpose athletics hall in the Sportforum is the main training centre for the throwing/jumping discipline and is required for special training throughout the year. In addition, the sports facility is also used for some of the professional sports organised by the two Chemnitz sports schools.
There are currently 19 national squads training at the federal base in Chemnitz. The absolute focus is on the throwing/jumping discipline group with nine national squads, including the two-time world champion and Olympic silver medallist David Storl, a prominent world leader in shot put.
After 17 years of use, the shot put and throwing area in the multi-purpose athletics hall no longer meets the requirements of training in high-performance sport. The throwing tarpaulins and impact mats are badly worn and the walls have been damaged by ball impacts. Renovation and remodelling of the throwing area are therefore absolutely essential to ensure that the athletes in the throwing/jumping discipline group at the Chemnitz national athletics base can continue to train.
The total construction costs of around 268,000 euros are being funded 30 per cent each by the federal and state governments. The construction project is to be realised from February to June 2014 and the technical design and equipment of the Chemnitz facility will be comparable to the standards already realised at the Federal Training Centre in Kienbaum. The City of Chemnitz Sports Office has commissioned Chemnitz-based Iproplan Planungsgesellschaft mbH with the architectural design.
