Species conservation day dedicated to white storks
Lectures on 10 December, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., cinema in the Weltecho
On Saturday, 10 December, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., interested parties are invited to the 3rd Chemnitz Species Conservation Day at the Weltecho cinema, Annaberger Straße 24. The event is organised by the Environmental Agency and the Chemnitz Nature Conservation Station in cooperation with the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre. This year, the species conservation day is dedicated to the protection of Chemnitz white storks.
Participation is free of charge. Representatives of the media are also invited.
Four presentations will cover the topics of feeding ecology, population development in Saxony and the region, current conservation measures and the ringing of white storks. The target group includes interested and committed citizens, ornithologists, volunteer conservationists, landowners and land users.
In recent years, the villages of Wittgensdorf and Grüna have developed into traditional breeding sites for the white stork. Two to three young storks have been raised in each eyrie. However, unlike in previous years, four young storks died in the summer of 2022 due to a lack of food. Due to the advancing climate change, it is to be expected that summer droughts with the associated food shortages for the Chemnitz white storks will increase. The event is intended to facilitate the communication and exchange of scientific findings on the white stork and the discussion of possible protective measures and practical solutions.
