Social committee gives the green light: Non-statutory welfare organisations for social services will receive almost two million euros in funding from the city in 2014
At its meeting yesterday, the Social Welfare Committee gave the go-ahead for the draft resolution B-208/2013 submitted by the administration and confirmed the administration's proposal for the funding of independent welfare organisations in 2014.It was thus decided to provide grants to independent welfare organisations for social services totalling almost two million euros and to distribute the grants subject to the adoption of the 2014 budget statutes.
In particular, the city's social welfare department supports senior citizens, people with disabilities, people with special social difficulties and services to promote the integration of people with a migration background. As the amount of voluntary services cannot increase in 2014 either as part of the measures to consolidate the city's budget, the planning of grants does not provide for any increases compared to the previous year. Exceptions are the planning of 25,000 euros for the continuation of community coordination in the Sonnenberg district after the ERDF funding expires and the assumption of the municipality's ten per cent compulsory share of the state funding of 1,400 euros to support volunteer carers through a carers' association.
At its meeting yesterday, the committee also agreed to discontinue funding for the Chemnitz food bank from 2014. This decision, which was preceded by discussions between the social welfare office and the food bank, was taken in line with the food bank's principles, which emphasise the voluntary nature of the association and its work based on donations. As a food distribution centre for needy citizens, the Tafel will of course continue to provide additional services in Chemnitz.
