Social commitment on World Hunger Day
Press/photo opportunities: Employees of the City of Chemnitz support the Tafel on 12 October, 11 a.m. and the Tagestreff der Wohnungslosenhilfe on 13 October, 11 a.m.
In the week from 10 to 17 October, around 30 employees of the City of Chemnitz will be volunteering in social institutions, for example helping to serve food to the needy. In doing so, they are drawing attention to World Hunger Day and World Food Day on 16 October.
The volunteers will help out in various facilities such as care homes, food banks, homeless charities and day-care centres. They will leave their jobs for a day and support the often voluntary social work in Chemnitz.
Representatives of the media are invited to accompany the missions at two selected locations:
- on Wednesday, 12 October, 11 a.m. at the Tafel, Zwickauer Straße 247, in the logistics, food preparation and distribution area
- on Thursday, 13 October, 11 a.m. at the Tagestreff der Chemnitzer Wohnungslosenhilfe, Annenstraße 22, at the harvest festival. (Photography of clients is not permitted here).
The aim of the campaign is to show that people all over the world are dependent on help with food and to honour the work of those who take care of those in need on a daily basis.
Background
16 October is World Hunger Day or World Food Day. The aim of this day is to draw attention to the still precarious food situation in the global world. First organised in 1979, it has been held in different countries every year since then. The date was chosen because the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was founded on 16 October 1945 as a specialised agency of the UN with the task of ensuring global food security.
