Snow load on roofs: school gyms will remain closed until the weekend - loads will be measured today
It is pleasing that not as much snow fell in Chemnitz last night from 11 to 12 December as previously forecast by the weather services - as a result, the situation with regard to the snow load on roofs (see PM 746 from 11 December 2012) has not currently worsened.
The snow cover on the roofs of the buildings affected by the temporary closure is currently between 30 and 50 centimetres on average. Based on these findings, it had to be assumed yesterday and must continue to be assumed today that the critical 40 centimetres of snow on the roofs have been reached and the decision to close the facilities as a precautionary measure must be upheld.
Today, Wednesday, further measurements of the snow cover will be carried out by the responsible building management and structural engineering department of the City of Chemnitz. A decision will then be made as to which roofs of the buildings that have been closed as a precautionary measure will have to be cleared of snow first tomorrow, Thursday. The focus will initially be on the municipal swimming pool in Mühlenstraße in order to be able to reopen the popular and much-frequented facility for citizens as quickly as possible, as well as the Richard-Hartmann-Halle and the Schloßteichhalle in order to make the currently planned games operations possible.
In any case, the school gyms that have been closed for use by the City of Chemnitz as a precautionary measure since today will remain closed until the weekend (for an overview, see also PM 746 from 11 December 2012 - www.chemnitz.de).
