Small gymnasium in the Sportforum is being renovated
The renovation and extension of the small gymnastics hall at the Sportforum will begin next week. Michael Stötzer, the Mayor of Chemnitz, together with successful coach Gabi Frehse (Chemnitz/Dresden Olympic Training Centre and TuS Altendorf), announced this today. Following completion of the construction work, the sports facility will once again fulfil the increased requirements of a national training centre and modern high-performance training.
The 15 gymnasts from the national squad and 10 gymnasts from the state squad of the Olympic training centre train in the hall. During the construction work, the athletes train in the neighbouring sports hall. Training is moved to Leipzig on Mondays and Fridays.
After the small gymnastics hall is emptied this week, gutting, demolition work and the erection of scaffolding will begin next week. In addition, the wall between the throwers' house and the gymnasium will be demolished and moved in order to extend the gymnasium with a diving pit. A new, raised trapezoidal roof will be installed in the throwing house. The façade will be completely renovated and fitted with thermal insulation, and the ventilation systems and electrical installations will also be renewed. This will create the perfect conditions for competitive sport to remain competitive at international level.
The extended gymnasium will have a new, modern sports floor. The ceiling will be fitted with radiant ceiling heating with integrated lighting and acoustic panels. The baffle walls will also be renewed.
A total of around 1.6 million euros will be invested in the modernisation of the hall, including 900,000 euros in subsidies. The work is due to be completed in January 2019.
